What a Mess This Has Become

How do I get my kids to clean up the mess they leave behind themselves?

Don't expect them to do it on their own like adults. In fact, there are some
adults who still won't clean their messes up even as they age. Children
are always focused on that next thing to do not on removing the debris
they left behind on their last interesting function.

Make the suggestion to clean and give them a hand. This keeps them
focused on the effort until you are satisfied it is complete.

Ask politely instead of yelling or berating the child or especially a teenager.

Refuse to provide them with anything until they clean their mess. Don't cook
their meals, wash their clothes or drive them anywhere until they clean.
This might sound odd and even severe, but it helps the child
understand how important the matter is to you.

Children don't reason the importance of issues as well as adults
with more life experience. They don't believe it is a big deal.

Above all be a friend and let them know that you are not punishing them
and that the process is simply a part of becoming mature and growing up.
